Land Based Whale Watching
From Giangi Negra, the resident caveman in
Hermanus.
"I took over Bientang's Cave Seafood Restaurant in 1995. It is a restaurant situated in a cave on the rocky shores of Walker Bay in the centre of Hermanus. I think that Hermanus should be included in your whalecoast website as it is only 120km from Cape Town and has the only whale sanctuary on the African continent with the best land based whale watching in the world. I can vouch for that as I was invited by the Explorers Club to go do research on Humpback whales in Hawaii in March 2002. There is no doubt in my mind that we have the best land based whale watching in the world." "In 2001 our minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Valli Moosa declared Walker Bay to be a whale sanctuary. It is the only whale sanctuary on the African continent, I think that is reason enough to be included in the whalecoast. I have been working on Bientang's Whale Watch Centre Proposal for the last four years, and construction of the research facility has already begun. Unfortunately it will only be completed for the return of the whales next year. By this time next year Hermanus will be able to boast having the only Whale Sanctuary with the only Whale Watch Centre on the African continent, only an hours drive from Cape Town." "Bientang's Cave Sea World has been chosen as a winner of the 29th International Tourism Awards to be presented to the winning firms on the 28th January 2004 in Madrid. We have also entered the Cape Tourism Awards that are to be presented to the winning firms on the 28th November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Bientang's Cave Restaurant is the best whale watching restaurant in the world, where you can eat delicious seafood on the deck with the ocean at your feet and the whales only a stone's throw away."
